Ms. Thompson nominated for 2008 Educator of the Year Award

December 9, 2008 – 9:42 am

Stepping into Ms. Thompson’s room is like stepping into an encyclopedia—a European tome of knowledge to be precise, complete with pictures. Everyone who remembers warns: if you take her classes, gear up to learn; your time with her means wrestling outlines, test corrections, memorizing Q cards that at some time will involve Gothic architecture. With the insurmountable time and effort she puts into her job, Thompson is undoubtedly one of the most dedicated teachers at Tesoro.
Her work never stops. Not for weekends, not for summer; it all adds up to the illuminating activities students experience in her classes, from arguing the philosophes’ viewpoints and trying King Louis XIV, to visiting the Getty Villa on a crisp, beach aired morning and discussing articles found in the Smithsonian magazine. Art history students don’t forget showcasing their talents for drawing Buddha and votive figures either. This year, Thompson’s tireless efforts have paid off once again (she’s received numerous awards in the past eighteen years of her career). She’s been named the 2008 Educator of the Year from the California League of High Schools. [more...]

Coach Barnes receives HS Coach of the Year from ABC7/ NFL

December 8, 2008 – 8:57 am

On November 30th, 2008, Tesoro’s varisty football coach Brian Barnes was informed of his selection as ABC7/ NFL’s High School Coach of the Year. Barnes was honored in the Sports Zone Show on December 6th, the same day as Tesoro’s game against Orange Lutheran High School.
The selection was made from the coaches that received the Coaches of the Week honor throughout the season. The Coach of the Week recognition is given to coaches for their efforts on and off the field with their athletes, the school, as well as the community they serve in.
Many might think that this recognition was given to Barnes strictly because of Tesoro’s (13-0) record yet it was also based upon acknowledgment of his hard work from supporters around him.
Part of his award for being honored was a $1,000 grant from the football program from the NFL Youth Football Fund, also known as the YFF. Another part of his recognition was shown with a certificate from ABC7 and the NFL.
On December 3, before Tesoro’s football team had their afternoon practice, camera crew and an ABC7 sports reporter came to Tesoro’s stadium to present Barnes’ framed certificate with the presence of his team and some Tesoro students and fans. Barnes told OC Varsity reporter, Don Albano, “It was a really cool thing. There were a lot of fans there.” [more...]

Another Victory for Mock Trial

December 5, 2008 – 10:25 pm

Tesoro High School’s Mock Trial team is 5-0.
After beating the all girl’s team from Cornelia Connelly last night, the Titans moved to the quarterfinals in the Constitutional Rights Foundation sponsored competition. Their success has been inevitable the past couple years, making the finals in the 2006 season and losing closely in the quarterfinals last year. The competition includes teams from 38 different school’s from around Orange County, and the drama is played out in real court in the Santa Ana courthouse. The team ranges from a pretrial lawyer, who in the current case of People vs. Lane argues a first amendment issue, three lawyers who are responsible for making objections and conducting both direct and cross examinations, four witnesses, a bailiff, and a timekeeper. RSM’s newest pizza place is like a little slice of Italy

December 3, 2008 – 9:54 am

Here in Southern California, it is as simple as left-clicking your mouse to find a good place to eat, and it is rare to eat at a restaurant which is lacking in style, taste, or inspiration. But never can you find a place that transports you to the root of the food you will eat.

Pizza e Vino in the Mercado Del Lago shopping center in Rancho Santa Margarita does just that. From the moment you walk through the patio to the time that you (or possibly your parents) sign the bill, you truly feel as if you are in Italy itself. The comfort of the room, with soft Italian music playing and the wood-fire oven blazing in the background, somehow makes you feel home.
What makes this restaurant spectacular may simply be its pizza dough. Hand-made and pressed daily with imported flour from Italy, this dough exceeds far beyond expectations. With the perfect mix of chewiness and crunchiness, Pizza e Vino’s dough is absolutely outstanding. The dough, either under the sauce and toppings of your pizza or the freshest ingredients imaginable of an appetizer, is baked to order in an 850-degree wood fire oven. It may seem like a simple aspect of a pizza, it being ‘only’ the crust, but once you taste the soft, hot dough straight from the oven, you will agree: the pizza dough makes for the best crust in miles. Twilight Terror Gives a New Hope to True Love

December 2, 2008 – 9:55 am

The “Twilight” phenomenon has gotten teenage girls awe struck with the ultimate love story of Edward and Bella.

The story of “Twilight” is about Bella (Kristen Stewart), an ordinary teenage girl who wants Edward (Robert Pattinson), the guy that she just can’t have who just happens to be a vampire. As the obvious attraction unravels through the beginning hatred to the unbearable love the viewer is hooked.

As Stephanie Meyer, the author of the “Twilight Saga” puts it in Bella’s words, “about three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him, and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be, that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”

Seniors spend Thanksgiving with college apps

December 1, 2008 – 9:48 am

Thanksgiving Break is traditionally a time for relaxing and hanging out with family, a break from school work and sleeping in.

This was not the case for some Tesoro seniors. Ariana Caronna and Sarah Ayad spent their entire break writing personal statements and sending in their college applications.

“It just feels so great knowing that I got this stressful application process over with,” Ariana Caronna said.

However, some lucky kids got to go on vacation. Katie Cameron spent her entire break on the beautiful island of Oahu. Whether she was laying out on the beach or shopping at the local markets, she had an envious Thanksgiving break. Others visited Disneyland a ridiculous amount of times. Thanks to her nifty yearlong pass, Weston Kilbride was able to go to Disneyland 4 times over the break.

When asked if she ever got sick of it, she replied, “Disneyland is the happiest place on earth, how could I ever get sick of it?”

Of course, the most important day of the break was Thursday, Thanksgiving. For some, this day is a great time to catch up with the family and eat delicious food. For others it is a time to dodge the awkward conversations with their grandparents, or run away from their crazy cousins who are shooting nerf guns at them.

5 Minutes with Royalty

November 22, 2008 – 9:30 am

The Tesoro Tribune sits down with Tesoro’s 2008 Homecoming King and Queen, Kent Kirlikovali and Dana Spencer.
TT: How did it feel to win?
KK: It felt great having all my homies select me. I did it for them basically. It was an honor being selected. I’ve always been popular; they just gave me a crown so [...]

A note on the mid-November slump

November 22, 2008 – 7:34 am

November, ah! November. What a sweet month. It begins with sugar-induced, post-Halloween paralysis and ends with Thanksgiving indulgence. Days are shorter, mornings brighter and cooler, school days slower in passing. But college applicants: hold fast! This can be the pleasantest of times, but also the deadliest of times if you let it have its way

Who is your favorite villain?

November 21, 2008 – 9:06 am

Sweet 16

Wicked Witch of the West vs. Sylar
Nothing is scarier than watching a maniac with a brain fetish on the loose. While the Wicked Witch of the West may have some evil deeds under her belt, the wildly popular musical, “Wicked,” has thrown her into an entirely different light - discounting all previous assumptions as to the extent of her “evilness.” Needless to say, Sylar takes the crown in this round for his continuing commitment towards ruining human lives.
Winner: Sylar

White Witch vs. Ursula
The White Witch and Ursula definitely have something in common - the ability to appeal to our deepest desires and use them against us. While Ursula tempted the innocent Ariel with human life, the White Witch appealed to Edward Pevensie’s desire for power and affection. The White Witch is definitely a threat with her magic powers and thirst for power. Nonetheless, Ursula’s low tenor combined with her multiple appendages definitely add to the fear factor. Round one goes to Ursula and her crooning musical numbers.
Winner: Ursula

The Grinch vs. Magneto
The Grinch may have stolen Christmas, but Magneto’s metal bending skills allow him to dominate any face-off. Although The Grinch incites fear from pint-sized-blonde midgets, Magneto’s awesome powers make him a threat to all of mankind. Brooding, wrinkly, and definitely evil, Magneto is the epitome of corruption and imperfect ideology, pulling ahead with his determination and resolve to achieve his dastardly evil goals. The Grinch’s growing heart kind of disqualifies him anyway.
Winner: The Grinch

Mugato vs. Darth Vader
With his fashion prowess and brainwashing abilities, Mugatu is no push-over-ra-tu. Scheming his way to the top of the fashion pack, Mugatu is a fashion diva with an agenda. Darth Vader on the other hand is terrifying, not only because of his unfortunate-looking helmet, but also because of the ease in which he made the transition from lovable Anakin to scary monster. With his scary breathing noises and deadly lightsaber skills, Darth Vader is the one to beat in this round.
Winner: Darth Vader

Lord Voldemort vs. Malificent
Lord Voldemort reigns supreme as the scariest looking villan ever. Malificent’s comedic green and purple ensemble hardly compare with Moldy Voldie’s snakelike facial features and alarming lack of body hair. With the never ending stream of words that rhyme with “Voldie” (Cue baldie, fartie, Barbie), this ugly composite of err… things, proves the success of his prolific name regonition campaign for most famous villan, with jewels like U-No-Poo- courtesy of the Weasley Twins.
Winner: Lord Voldemort

Cruella de Vil vs. Osama Bin Laden
Cruella de Vil and Osama Bin Laden both share similar qualities- they both love to scheme, decimate innoncent lives for their own purposes, and desperately need new fashion stylists. Although Cruella’s vendetta against 101 spotted puppies irked the ire of PETA, it was hardly comparable to the devastation of 9/11 orchestrated by Bin Laden. Although De Vil’s ensemble and less than desirable facial features have haunted many a puppy’s nightmares, the terrorist wins this round.
Winner: Osama Bin Laden

The Joker vs. CollegeBoard
Evil can be found in the most unlikely of places. Case in point, Collegeboard’s seemingly “cute” mascot may appear innocent to some, but for this senior, a single look at that dreaded acorn elicits fear beyond reading mental comphrehension. On the other gloved hand, The Joker’s haunted image combined with actor Heath Ledger’s untimely death is enough to kill off any laughter within a two mile radius. This round goes to The Joker - finally giving him something to really grin about.
Winner: The Joker

Captain Hook vs. Sauron
These two villans both seem to have a penchant for shiny things, whether they be silver hooks or gold rings. Captain Hook’s relentless pursuit of Peter Pan can prove to be quite frightening at times, and his highly expressive eyes often reveal a little too many of his insecurities, yet his dark curly locks certainly invoke a sense of fear and admiration. However, Sauron’s blazing all-seeing eye takes the crown for this round. Time to “ring” in the winner for round one!
Winner: Sauron

Elite Eight

Lord Voldemort vs. Osama Bin Laden
With the destruction of two of New York City’s most memorable buildings and the lives of 2,974 Americans, Osama Bin Laden definitely has some evil deeds under his belt. Yet even this tragedy melts in comparison to Lord Voldemort’s discrimination of Muggleborns, torture of innocent victims and relentless cold-blooded murder. Avada Kadavra Osama - remember, karma BITES.
Winner: Lord Voldemort
