Tesoro’s Regular Season Ends Perfectly
November 16, 2008 – 1:00 amThe Tesoro Titans beat both the Dana Hills Dolphins 56-26 en route to winning their second consecutive South Coast League Title and their 10th league game in a row.
The game remained close until after the second quarter when the score was 28-13 and Dana scored to make the game 28-20, then Robbie Picazo found Zach Bevan for a 37 yard touchdown reception. After that the game was never close again, the Titans excellent defense proceeded to shut down the Dolphins and allowed the Titans to score 28 consecutive points. The Titans defense also contributed points in the form of interceptions returned for touchdowns by Brett Gudim and Trevor Weis.
Friday night’s victory ensured that the Titans wouldn’t have to split the league title and that Tesoro will receive a top seed for playoffs. Translation: the first playoff team we face shouldn’t be the greatest ever. Even more interesting- after Esperanza upset Edison a 5 way tie for first was created in the Sunset league and after a series of coin flips to determine who will make it into the playoffs it looks as if Los Alamitos who was previously out, is now in. Why does any of this matter? Los Al is coached by John Barnes, the father of our coach Brian Barnes and that means that there is potential for a Tesoro vs. Los Al match up in the first round.
Either way the Tesoro Titans have accomplished what they set set out to do during the regular season- finish perfectly.
