The Tesoro Tribune sits down with Tesoro’s 2008 Homecoming King and Queen, Kent Kirlikovali and Dana Spencer.
TT: How did it feel to win?
KK: It felt great having all my homies select me. I did it for them basically. It was an honor being selected. I’ve always been popular; they just gave me a crown so now everyone knows it.
TT: So now it’s official?
KK: Yeah it’s official that I’m popular.
TT: Has being popular always been a dream of yours?
KK: Well I mean it just comes with being Kent. I mean I’m Kent, I’m popular. It’s just how it is.
TT: So did you see this whole homecoming king and queen thing coming?
DS: I can see the future so I called it
TT: What did you think when you saw those camels?
DS: [laughs] I thought I was going to fall off. Everyone said I looked really awkward so it was a little embarrassing but the camels were fun…I must say, I called it. At [homecoming] practice Amanda Ross and I were joking around saying “Oh we’re going to ride a zebra or something” and I said “I tap tap a camel.” I told you I can see the future. See?
TT: How did it feel to be carried off on a litter carried by six shirtless water polo boys?
DS: Well, seeing as I know half of them, they were giving me a hard time. They said that I ate a big lunch and that I was really fat so it was a little depressing.
TT: Kent, didn’t you say you’re getting recognized now ever since you won?
KK: Yeah, I have a following now. I don’t know if it’s because of who I am or because of the crown probably because of who I am.
DS: I think it’s the beard.
KK: The beard? Oh yeah, no-shave November but I mean, I’m used to [the attention]. It’s who I am.
TT: Speaking of the beard, how long do you intend on growing it out this time?
KK: Well, for sure November, without a doubt. We’ll see after that. I might go into the Decem-beard. If I do Decem-beard, I might end up doing Janu-hairy to Furry February, all the way to Moustache March. But I don’t know, it’s still a long shot right now. We’ll see how it works out.
TT: Do you get your power from the beard?
KK: Yeah, the power – power comes from the beard. All men with authority have beards because that’s where the power comes from.
DS: Didn’t they fight over Lincoln’s beard?
KK: Yeah the Civil War was because the South feared Lincoln’s beard so much.
TT: What was going through your mind when you won?
DS: I don’t really know. It was really quick. It just happened so fast.
KK: I mean, I witnessed it. I was one of the princes holding the sword and I’ve never seen such genuine happiness as I saw on Dana’s face when they announced her name. It was great.
TT: What about you?
KK: When they announced my name, I was pumped. I was like “Yeah! I get the crown!” and then I heard “Speech! Speech! Speech!” so I started thanking everyone and then [the DJ] got mad. He wanted to play his music. He cut me off with [music] and said “Dude, you’re done.”
TT: Dana, how would you rank Kent’s speech among the greatest speeches of our time?
DS: It definitely beat Martin Luther King Jr.’s, for sure.
TT: How did it make you feel?
DS: I wanted to cry but I didn’t want my make up to run so I held it in.
KK: They cut me off. I wasn’t even halfway done with my speech and they cut me off. Just imagine if it went all the way through.
TT: Would you like to finish your speech right now?
KK: To be honest, I don’t remember where I left off because I was in such shock.
DS: You thanked Jesus and you thanked all of our friends.
KK: I remember I thanked some friends and I remember I wasn’t even halfway done with thanking everyone and
DS: Because you have so many friends?
KK: Yeah because I know so many people.
TT: Is there anyone you need to thank?
KK: Well Dana Spencer is really the only one who matters, my queen. That’s what it comes down to. Everyone is important but Dana is number one in my life.
DS: And I’m in your Top 8.
KK: Yeah if you’re number one in the Top 8, you’re in.
TT: As king and queen, do you guys have any plans?
DS: I think we’re eloping to Las Vegas soon.
KK: Yeah, on the camels.
TT: With Burch in his Elvis suit?
DS: Yeah, isn’t he marrying us?
KK: That’s true. He’s going to meet us down there.
TT: How appropriate with the homecoming theme.
KK: Yeah, Burch was mad at me though. I came in [to take court pictures at the dance] and he said, “Dude, 33 years and I haven’t won it yet. What’s up with that?” And then I said, “I’m sorry, I’m just way too popular.” I mean, I told him, he’d get ‘em next year. He was definitely bitter.
TT: So where were you before they announced the king?
KK: Well I thought they were going to announce it way later but I had a word with [activities commissioner] Kate O’Brien and said, “Hey look, we got to get this on the road.”
TT: Yeah exactly, and then you disappeared.
KK: I know. It was because I wasn’t expecting she’d listen to me.
TT: But you’re the king
KK: I know but I didn’t know that but they knew that, that’s why they listened.
TT: We all know that the biggest reason you guys wanted to win was to be covered in the Tesoro Tribune two times in a row right?
KK: Oh yeah, of course.
DS: Tesoro what?
