Seniors celebrate the beginning of the end at Knott’s

June 5, 2009 – 8:08 am

The time has finally come that kids wait for all their lives. From the time they were in elementary they have counted down the minutes to the time when they would be high school seniors. Now it is their turn for all the perks, privileges, festivities, and freedoms that come along with finishing high school.

Tesoro seniors took their senior picnic to Knott’s Berry Farm last Thursday. It was a day filled with fun and excitement for all who attended. From the Accelerator to Supreme Scream, seniors were able to enjoy the excitement of ditching school, soaking up that Buena Park sun, and spending the day with their closest friends.

“It was so nice to catch up with my best friend and have one more blast of a time before I head off to college,” said senior Tim Johnson. “I am so glad I went.” [more...]

Green Day is BACK!

June 5, 2009 – 8:07 am

After a brief break from their stardom from “American Idiot” to reintroduce themselves and their style in their Foxboro Hottubs record, Green Day is back. Using sounds more commonly heard in their older songs, such as Reluctant and Maria, “21st Century Breakdown” brings out more than Green Day’s ability to rock. Billie Joe Armstrong, singer and guitarist, can not only scream, but he can seriously sing, as heard in Before the Lobotomy, ¡Viva la Gloria!, and 21 Guns. The album tells the stories of dark times and situations through a three-act opera, showing the artistry in Billie Joe’s songwriting. To The Rolling Stone, he said, “They’re just photographs of what goes on inside my head — and wanting to connect with yourself, and your audience too. I’d like to write something more about joy and happiness. But for me, that’s the release, putting it out there. [more...]

Summer Blockbusters: Hit or Flop?

May 31, 2009 – 8:18 am

The time is coming and people are getting excited. Yes, it is going to be the summer, but that’s not what people have been anticipating. What everyone is waiting for are the summer’s blockbusters. This year Hollywood did not wait until the summer to release big movies like Wolverine and Terminator Salvation, but the big daddies have yet to be released into the ring. With movies ranging from the fantasy world of Hogwarts to action caused by a Persian Prince, there are genres that will match the tastes of everyone. Here are some predictions on which movies will hit and which ones will become infamous for its flop.
Let’s start with a comedy that appears to be incredibly funny. Year 1, staring Jack Black and Michael Cera, is about two lazy hunter-gatherers that are forced to go on an epic journey after being kicked out of their tribe. With appearances from “McLovin” (Christopher Charles Mintz-Plasse) and Vinnie Jones this movie seems to have loads of potential. With Black’s infinite list of great movies like Shallow Hal and School of Rock in conjuncture with Cera’s newly made fame through Juno and Superbad, the combination of their humor will ensure many laughs. If you are looking for a more kid friendly comedy, do not fret; enter Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. The rather eclectic gang now has to face dinosaurs that escaped extinction by living in a tropical area during the Ice Age. After two movies, it seems as if Blue Sky Studios does not want to let this movie retire, and there are no guarantees as to whether it will be a good movie. [more...]

Review: The Biggest Loser

May 28, 2009 – 8:10 am

The Biggest Loser has just finished its seventh season on NBC where it has been since season six. This show is made to help overweight people lose a significant amount of weight in a healthy way. The competitors have a routine workout along with a personal trainer to help them. At the end of every week, they are weighed and get to see the progress they have made. The competitors put in serious amounts of effort and commitment to reach their goal. They have to have confidence and the drive to push them through their obstacles.
The seventh season finale ends with three people waiting to reach the top: Helen, Mike, and Tara. All three of them have struggled throughout the season to shed their weight. They’ve trained hard in pursuit of their goal. Each contestant has lost a significant amount of weight and show that nothing is impossible if you try hard enough. Helen, a mom, started in at the weight of 257 pounds. She pushed herself to lose the necessary weight so she could easily play with her kids. Mike the second competitor, is only eighteen years old. He started the show at 388 pounds. Mike was the youngest competitor to join the show. He found it difficult to be so young and carrying all that weight. The third and last finalist is Tara. Tara is the front-runner and powerhouse on the show. She started at the weight of 294 pounds. [more...]

What happens when the world’s largest museum comes alive?

May 27, 2009 – 8:02 am

Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), Owen Wilson (Jedediah Smith), and Robin Williams (Teddy Roosevelt) reprise their roles in “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” the much anticipated sequel to 2006’s “Night at the Museum.” New to this movie are several historical figures including Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams), Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria), Abe Lincoln (Azaria), Ivan the Terrible (Christopher Guest), Al Capone (Jon Bernthal), and Napoleon Bonaparte (Alain Chabat), just to name a few. The Jonas Brothers also make a very short appearance as three singing cherubs.
The movie opens two years after the adventures at the Museum of Natural History come to an end. Larry is no longer a security guard at the museum but the successful head of Daley Devices, which is responsible for such genius products including the Glow in the Dark flashlight. Feeling nostalgic, Larry visits the museum at sundown when the museum comes to life only to find that most of his beloved friends are being packed up the next day to be sent to the federal archives in the Smithsonian. Angels and Demons tops box office opening weekend

May 26, 2009 – 8:09 am

The suspenseful, action-packed Angels and Demons was released on May 15, 2009. Based on the popular book by Dan Brown, it has become a worldwide craze. Compared to the movie, the novel is considered to be of higher praise as stated by various critics. As is common with movies based-on-novels, the novel has a variety of key details that were left out during the movie. The suspense and frightening aspects key to the novel are underestimated, leaving a range of viewers quite unhappy with the film production. Some moviegoers enjoy the film regardless. Sophomore Angel Chang comments, “I really enjoyed watching this movie. At first, I wasn’t sure if it’d be as great as the book. Yeah, it did leave out some details, but I would definitely recommend it to everyone. It was a movie that will keep you entertained throughout, with no dull moments.” [more...]

Marathons make my day

May 22, 2009 – 7:54 am

On the weekend, when the birds and the young children playing outside wake you up, rather than the blaring, ear-splitting beep of the alarm, there is nothing better than a marathon on television to brighten your day.
Forget homework; save that for Sunday. Forget getting ready for the day; save that for tonight at five, an hour before you leave for a party. Forget cleaning; save that for… okay just skip that. Forget exercising; save that for weekday sports practices. Forget everything but the television and your favorite show, playing over and over again.
So what if you have seen the episode before! Even if it is the one that replays every week and you have seen it over ten times, there is still the anticipation for the next episode, starting in 59 minutes, 58 minutes, 57 minutes…

So, what are your favorite marathons? Are they the endless CSI: Crime Scene Investigation marathons on Spike? Are they the countless House marathons on USA? Are they the long marathons of Psych? Or are they the continuous marathons of Law and Order, of which all three are scattered on different channels all at once? [Read more...]
