Going the Distance: Pre-season Track

by · February 15, 2012

The start of a new semester comes with many changes, and a major change for many of the girls on the cross country team was the transition from post-season cross country into pre-season distance track.  “It’s hard to go straight from easy runs right into speed workouts,” explained sophomore Kylee Webster.  “And now we have to wake up early for Saturday practices again instead of being able to run on our own.”

On Monday, February 6, the girls started out their first week of the pre-season with a ladder speed workout on the track.  This meant they completed a series of distances at a fast pace from lowest distance to highest and back to lowest again with a recovery jog in between each interval.  On Tuesday there was a six-mile recovery run, followed by another speed workout on Wednesday, and a seventy to seventy-five minute long-distance run on Thursday.

Friday was a cool day, and after school the girls met for practice to complete a recovery run.  Despite some drizzling rain on Saturday morning, the distance track team met again at Tesoro for practice.  They left campus to complete their run, another speed workout.  “We’ve been doing a lot of hard workouts this week, but we need them to prepare for the season,” said junior Sarah Parsons.  “If we work hard now, then when it comes time to compete in the races, we’ll be prepared and we’ll feel a lot better knowing that we’re prepared.”

After returning to Tesoro after the workout on Saturday, junior Sarah Parsons and senior Amy LaRue recover by stretching and drinking plenty of water so they do not feel sore or sick later.

Before practice started early Saturday morning, juniors Madison French and Reanne Cedajas take some time to joke around as they wait for others to arive.
