Girls Cross Country runs away with another title
Led by sophomore Emily Scharmann with a time of 17:43, the varsity team posted the best score in the non-sweepstakes varsity race. Scharmann said, “This year at Mt. Sac I was a little nervous because I had won the race last year. At the end of the race I was really happy because I won and broke 18 on this hard course. I am so proud of our team.” Freshman Erica Liem (18:06), sophomore Stephanie Lapidus (18:10), senior Nicci Corbin (18:46), and sophomore Ashley Elliot (18:55) all followed close behind as the top point scorers for the team. Amy LaRue, varsity captain for the meet, said, “We raced smart and strategic. Being in the lower-ranked varsity race, we concentrated on merely winning and running good times. In essence, this was a warm-up meet for CIF prelims and finals soon to come.”
The Mt. Sac Invitational is 2.93 miles of hills, flats, and dirt. Its the same as the course run for CIF, Prelims, and Finals. With over 600 teams competing in it, Mt. Sac is the largest invitational in the nation.
The JV girls team ran strong as well, upsetting conference rivals, Trabuco Hills and Capo Valley, to win first place. Senior Clare Devlin won the race with a time of 20:27. Junior Alexis Conley, 20:46, finished in third place and senior Jackie Jacobs, 21:13, took fifth place.
The freshman girls’ team placed second, and sophomore girls placed fourth in their heat.
