Track Break

by

Sophomores Kate Custer and Kirby Ruback walk to the drinking fountain after finishing 10 ramps on the lower feild.

With a meet coming up against San Juan Hills, Tesoro Track needed to stay in shape over the break. They did this by holding practices from 9:00-11:00a.m. on Monday through Friday during break. “I was actually really glad there was practice over the break,” said sophomore Fabiola Lopez, “my family wasn’t going anywhere and it gave me something to do and time to hang out with my friends.”

The weather did not agree with the plans for practice however. Two of the five days scheduled for practice had rain during the allotted practice time. Even though it was pouring outside, dedicated athletes still practiced in the rain. “The season is almost over. It doesn’t matter if it is raining or not, we need to get in our practices and if this is the only way to do it, then we will have to go through it,” said sophomore Shelby Hartman.

This week there are two meets scheduled for the track team. On Wednesday they will face off against San Juan Hills in their last league dual meet. This Saturday will be the last invitational meet called Orange County Championships where only two runners in each event can compete from each school.

Track Meet vs. Laguna Hills

by

In the second league meet of the season, both the boys and girls track teams were doing well. The boys’ Frosh team is still undefeated and Varsity has the number two runner in the state, junior Hunter Simmons.

During the Frosh distance one mile race, Tesoro clutched the top three spots with freshman Nic Moore coming in first. Also the Varsity relay team with junior Syd Reynolds,  senior Derek Barnes, sophomore Tre Mitchell, and junior Hunter Simmons won a close 4×100 race with Simmons running the last leg to secure the win.

The girls distance team has strong runners, especially in the mile with Erica Liem [10] and Stephanie Lapidus [11] scoring first and second against Laguna Hills. “My goal is to PR like everyone else but when I run the mile I don’t pay attention to anyone around me and I just focus on my own race to do my personal best but I also strive to score for my team.” said sophomore Erica Liem.

Along with the athletes who ran, there are the athletes who jumped that contributed to the scores against Laguna. The jumping athletes are important to the scoring of a dual meet because their points count and the points they score could potentially make or break a team at the meet. “I high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault. I love jumping because I just don’t like running but I like being a part the team, and by jumping, I know that I am contributing to the team.” said sophomore Kirby Ruback.

With the boys and girls winning in all events, Laguna Hills was swept.

JV Lacrosse Tournament

by

Surprising many with their rapidly developing skills, the JV girls lacrosse are making a definite impression in southern Orange County. In the annual Sticks and Stones tournament, the Tesoro girls brought up the intensity in their game against Corona Del Mar High School but fell short 2-4. They returned with a win of 6-2 against El Toro, and ended the tournament with a shut out against the renowned Mater Dei. The wins were a true success, but the memories of the event proved just as wonderful. Sophomore Faith Duarte said “the best part of the tournament was definitely playing hard and growing together as a team. I thought it was going to be pretty exhausting but there was never a dull moment; the spirits were high and everyone was so supportive and positive. Overall it was an awesome experience and I would for sure do again!”

Most importantly, the strong bonds played a huge role in their success. Sophomore Leah Jelaco said, “the whole team worked really hard and everyone contributed to the wins and the scores really showed how far we have all come to work together.”
