The Poster War has Begun

by

Nearly all corners and cracks are covered up by the hundreds of posters for campaign week, transforming the Tesoro campus into a battlefield for the poster war of the century. After a long weekend of decorating and designing shirts and flyers, the candidates woke up early Monday morning in order to claim the most valuable spots, the most renowned being under the Tesoro marquis.  Junior Denae Luce said “The catch is that tomorrow morning at 5 am will basically be like the hunger games. Wild. Crazy. Fight for life. Maybe not fight for life.  But poster spots are first come first serve, and the good spots can help win votes.”

AP Euro Study Session

by

At tutorial on Friday, sophomore Josh Keilty messes around with the Hunger Games book and does the three finger salute that Katniss is famous for.

On Friday at tutorial in room 409, several sophomores realized that the AP test and the final for AP Euro were just around the corner. “It came up on me so fast,” said sophomore Stephani Hendirx, “so my friends who were in that tutorial wanted to get together and do a study group. I invited them over to my house on Sunday.”  Josh Keilty, Shawna Strecker, Brandon Mayo, Kate Custer,  and Pauline Kim packed up their books in their bags and went to Hendrix’s house for 5 hours on Sunday shortly after noon. After reviewing some FRQ topics and going through the earlier chapters of the books, the dedicated students called in for pizza. “We were just super hungry because we had worked so hard and we needed some brain food, so we thought: why not pizza?” said Mayo.  After the pizza had arrived the students took a short break before continuing to hit the books. The last hour consisted of verbal quizzing of each student on a variety of topics and on small details that the AP exam will not omit. “They could ask us anything from, ‘What is the Napoleonic code?’ to ‘What was the causes that were believed to cause the Black Death in the fourteenth century?’ and it is just a lot of history to comprehend.  I don’t know what will happen on this test,” said Kim. After the quizzing, each student took their own way home and felt that they had benefitted from the difficult and trying study session that they had just attended.

The Magic of Service

by

The Key Club’s 66th annual District Convention was held at the Santa Clara Convention Center during spring break on Apr. 13 through Apr. 15. Considered the “most amazing Key Club event of the year,” the District Convention Program offered the most interactive experience for Key Clubbers from three different states (California, Nevada, and Hawaii); to come together to recognize club achievements, elect the new Executive Board, and partake in fun activities during the three-day span. Workshops were facilitated by lieutenant governors, district executive officers, and sponsoring adults in preparation for the upcoming service year. The convention center hosted a conference, an awards ceremony, and the Governor’s Ball. “My favorite part of the convention was the food. It took a lot of work to prepare for DCON, but it was all worth it when weekend of spring break came. I can’t wait to come again next year,” said sophomore Jessica Wang.

Sundays with Harnett

by

For all of the students who think one week at school is not enough, they are in luck, Mr. Harnett has generously been offering Sunday afternoon study sessions. In preparation for the upcoming AP United States History exam on May 11, students have been trying to get as much information in their brains as they can. Junior Dana Buchanan said, “I really would like to spend my Sundays at home, but going to these study sessions is for the best, plus who doesn’t want to hang out with Harnett.” Mr. Harnett has been having study sessions about twice a week for the past two months getting his students ready for the upcoming tests. “I usually have so much homework that I don’t have time to do anything else, but I try to make time for Harnett, the review classes are really helpful and makes all the information fresh in my mind.” said Junior Sabrina Miller. The students who attend the reviews, get a bunch of facts from the Colonial time period to The Cold War fresh in their minds for the upcoming AP tests.

Los Rios Rock School

by

Shoot Up the Cat all set up and ready to rock the night away at Los Rios Rock School.

The Los Rios Rock School located in San Juan hosted “The Kids are Back,” an event that occurs two nights in a row where students from the rock school preform brand new songs. Performing  with the students were local bands such as “The In Between” and Tesoro’s own “Shoot Up the Cat!” “It was a great way to spend the last Saturday of spring break,” said junior Lindsay Dutch a longtime fan of SUTC.  “Shoot up the Cat” played a full set consisting of not only covers of songs like “I Got Mine” by the “Black Keys” and “Level” by the “Raconteurs” but also originals like “Open the Train” and “Broken.”  “Most high school bands aren’t that good but they definitely have a lot of talent in the band,” said junior Ryan Kelleher, “when I heard some of the songs they actually wrote I was really impressed. They definitely rocked the night.” “Shoot Up the Cat” really did rock the night putting on an amazing show for the rock school and all the Tesoro students there to show support and have fun.
