NFL (Nerd Football League)

by

Have you ever wished you could play sports competitively without having to worry about playing with people that actually have talent? For the past couple of weeks a group of not so athletic students have been organizing pick-up games of football and basketball through a group called the “Nerd Football League” or NFL for short. Members of the group have been meeting up for a couple of hours each weekend in Coto De Caza to play football, however for their meeting on February 12, the day following winter formal, they were short a few players and decided to play basketball. Senior, Rohit Jayawardhan explained, “We’ve got a good plan to have weekly pick-up games now, doing different sports each week.”

In Memory (and Vengeance) of MegaUpload

by

On Thursday, Internet giant MegaUpload was taken down by the U.S. Government. While the site’s headquarters are in Hong Kong, the government shut down the site (including its sister sites) on the grounds that one of the giant’s servers was in Virginia, while its founders were arrested in New Zealand. As its name suggests, MegaUpload is (or rather, was) a site where anonymous users could upload videos, movies or any other files that are too big to send through conventional means, such as email. The Motion Picture Association of America accused MegaUpload of hosting an extreme number of copyrighted data.

Less than thirty minutes after the site went down, the infamous hacker group Anonymous began a full-fledged attack at what they claimed was the government’s answer to the internet blackout. Calling the shut-down “the single largest Internet attack in its history”, the group retaliated with hack-attacks on the US Department of Justice’s justice.gov, FBI.gov, as well as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), both of which are staunch advocates of the SOPA and PIPA bills. Barrett Brown, a public spokesperson of Anonymous, noted “so if this is what can occur without SOPA being passed, imagine what can occur after SOPA is passed”.

The Party was really a great experience. It is always so much fun for everyone. I love how much everyone gets into the dancing, Alison Sharon, 10, said. There was music, dancing, and lots of cookies for students to decorate and eat. The Halloween paarty is one of many holiday parties that Best Buddies throws throughout the year.

Bottles for Benefits

by

Thousands of bottles.  Twenty bags.  One cause.  National Honor Society President Jenna Ward organized the collection of twenty bags of recyclable bottles to be turned in for money for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund, an organization focused on benefiting the education and the health of the children affected by the September 11th terrorist attacks. Throughout the month of September, students collected bottles to help the September 11th victims.  “I wanted to do something for September 11th for the tenth anniversary and thought it should be something tangible,” Ward said.

Ward discussed fundraising ideas with Treasurer Taylor England and club advisor Ms. Stegner, and decided to collect bottles to raise money, to promote environmental safety, and to raise awareness of recycling.

The bottle collection for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund was the National Honor Society’s first activity of the 2011-2012 school year, and was also the first activity Ward organized as the club president.  “I just feel really honored,” Ward explained. “I’m very proud to be NHS president and I hope to get a chance to make it into a more active organization.”

National Honor Society collected about 140 dollars, with about 15 people donating to the cause. The club plans on continuing the donation throughout the year. “I think this ‘Cash for Kids’ fundraiser works well on two levels: first, we would be helping the children orphaned by 9/11, and second, we would be helping with the Tesoro goal of being an eco-friendly school,” said club advisor Ms. Stegner.

Back to School Night

by

For students, the school day ended at 12:40pm on a Thursday, September 29, but parents soon took their place.

The new school year had begun. It was time for the parents to discover what was to come. During passing period, the hallways were full of fundraising by Impact Leaders, ASB guides, Tennis and Track & Field student-athlete recruiters, German and Spanish club members, enthusiastic teachers, and anxious parents. Senior Sarah McPherson said, “There was an insane amount of parents and students who participated in Back to School Night,” she said, “We were able to sell a large amount of cookies to raise money for Impact and better support the freshmen.”

The Impact leaders sold cookies to provide a better assortment for the freshmen. As parents raced from one classroom to the next, ASB students stood by as available escorts. German students raised money for classroom supplies by selling German treats and pastries. Spanish students persuaded parents to enjoy hot Starbucks’ coffee.

While the majority of parents found comfort in the student desks and teachers began their lectures, students, such as senior Haylie McDonald, took time to relax and take advantage of the school night to spend time with friends. “In between class periods our Impact class played and learned amusing games and silly dances until the parents came out of their classrooms. We then went right back to business,” she explained.

Once Back to School Night came to a close, the hallways were deserted. While freshmen students and their parents prepared themselves for four more years of “back to school nights”, senior students and their parents realized that it was the end to the past 12-13 years of “back to school nights”. The 2011-2012 Back to School Night impacted the student body through fundraising and community support, while parents established their first impressions on the progressing school year.
