Anaheim Welcomes “Nevershoutnever” for Two Sold Out Nights

by

Lead singer Christofer Drew leads the crowd through a set of acoustic songs chosen by the audience members.

Juniors Jenn Gethers and Lauren Sykes watch the concert at Chain Reaction from their spots in the second row.

Last weekend, alternative band “Nevershoutnever” performed in Anaheim at Chain Reaction at two sold out shows.  Before the band performed, opening acts “Kurt Travis” and “Koji” played a set of about eight songs each.  Local acts “Tiffany Alvord” and “Bear Cat” also each performed a set of songs after winning a contest offered by the headlining band, “Nevershoutnever”, that allowed fans to vote on bands from the surrounding area that would serve as the opening acts for the shows. “I went to the show on Friday for my friend Danielle’s 18th birthday and I had a blast!” said Senior Zoe Miles. “It was such a fun way to celebrate her birthday and one of our favorite bands on the same night.” After two hours of opening bands, “Nevershoutnever” performed a one hour set that included songs from their first singles to their latest release “Time Travel”.  “This was my second time seeing ‘Nevershoutnever’ and I absolutely loved it,” said Senior Lawren Jaben. “Christofer Drew sounds almost better when he is performing live and I love his positive energy when he is on stage.” With fans playing and singing with the band and songs chosen by the audience, Saturday night’s show was very different from the night before.  Instead of following a set of songs, the lead singer Christofer Drew decided to ask the fans at the show to request songs that they wanted to hear. The band even allowed aspiring musicians in the crowd to come up to the stage and play with him during two of the songs where one fan played the guitar during “What is Love?” and the other got to sing a duet with Drew on “Bigcitydreams”. “I liked the feeling of the concert on Saturday,” said Junior Jenn Gethers. “The concert was very carefree and it was fun to have the audience choose the songs since they chose many of my favorites!” It was evident from the large lines of people waiting outside the venue and the loud screaming throughout the show , “Nevershoutnever’s” performances at Chain Reaction were clearly a hit.

A Win for Videogames

by

Rejoice fellow game enthusiasts! Nintendo officially announced the U.S. release of one of the most anticipated RPG videogames for its console: “The Last Story” for Wii. Originally released January of last year in Japan and Europe, it appeared that the game would never find an official localization in North America. Thanks to the efforts of die-hard RPG fans, driving the project known as Operation Rainfall, Nintendo has handed “The Last Story” to the game publisher XSEED. What started as a small online petition grew into a full-fledged campaign. Both Gamestop and Amazon.com are accepting preorders for “The Last Story,” which is currently scheduled to be released on June 20.

The fans behind Operation Rainfall will continue to campaign until the games "Xenoblade," " The Last Story" and "Pandora's Tower" are localized for the U.S.

IMPACT Interviews

by

Skipping the opportunity for some extra sleep on a late start Wednesday morning, students arrived at school around 7:00 a.m. to be interviewed for IMPACT mentor positions for the 2012-2013 school year. The interviews took place in Mrs. Di Somma’s room, and students were sent into the room in groups of seven in a speed-date-like fashion.

Juniors, Kristi Johnson, Darby Curtis, and Allie Bond, make up one of the seven interviews panels. They currently interview Junior Will Foster, asking about his strengths and weaknesses.

Each interviewee moved quickly between several small panels of interviewers. After his interview, sophomore Griffin Schnieder, explained, “They had a new technique for interviewing this year. It was quicker but also a bit more intense because you had to make several first impressions. Overall, however, I think I did well.” Applicants are expected to be informed of their acceptance by the end of March.

NFL (Nerd Football League)

by

Have you ever wished you could play sports competitively without having to worry about playing with people that actually have talent? For the past couple of weeks a group of not so athletic students have been organizing pick-up games of football and basketball through a group called the “Nerd Football League” or NFL for short. Members of the group have been meeting up for a couple of hours each weekend in Coto De Caza to play football, however for their meeting on February 12, the day following winter formal, they were short a few players and decided to play basketball. Senior, Rohit Jayawardhan explained, “We’ve got a good plan to have weekly pick-up games now, doing different sports each week.”

In Memory (and Vengeance) of MegaUpload

by

On Thursday, Internet giant MegaUpload was taken down by the U.S. Government. While the site’s headquarters are in Hong Kong, the government shut down the site (including its sister sites) on the grounds that one of the giant’s servers was in Virginia, while its founders were arrested in New Zealand. As its name suggests, MegaUpload is (or rather, was) a site where anonymous users could upload videos, movies or any other files that are too big to send through conventional means, such as email. The Motion Picture Association of America accused MegaUpload of hosting an extreme number of copyrighted data.

Less than thirty minutes after the site went down, the infamous hacker group Anonymous began a full-fledged attack at what they claimed was the government’s answer to the internet blackout. Calling the shut-down “the single largest Internet attack in its history”, the group retaliated with hack-attacks on the US Department of Justice’s justice.gov, FBI.gov, as well as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), both of which are staunch advocates of the SOPA and PIPA bills. Barrett Brown, a public spokesperson of Anonymous, noted “so if this is what can occur without SOPA being passed, imagine what can occur after SOPA is passed”.
