The Voice Review

by

Season two has almost come and past, but now it is time for the semifinalists to take the stage. The coaches on this show have difficult decisions to make because to even be invited to this show, a singer has to have lots of talent already.

Next week Team Cee Lo Green, Team Adam Levine, Team Christina Aguilera, and Team Blake Shelton battle it to see whose team will come out on top. The winner of the voice gets a recording contract, and the coach gets praise and bragging rights for the next season, as Adam Levine had this year, having the season one winner last year, giving him leverage over the other coaches for the best singers this season.

The four finalists are Tony Lucca for Team Adam, Chris Mann for Team Christina, Jermaine Paul for Team Blake, and Juliette Simms for team Cee Lo.

With all the singers having their own twists on songs and different styles, America has variety to choose from, so something for everyone and the race to be best is up for grabs.

Long Jump

by

Track is an intense sport with a variety of events, among them there lies sprinting, distance running, pole-vault, and throwing events such as discus and shot put. Many athletes chose to direct their energy towards a different event though: the long jump. “The long jump is an event that consists of one person, about 100 feet of track and a pit of sand,” Said Junior Eric Young “I’ve been jumping for years now, and it’s really my passion; once you’re out there at the pit it’s just you and the elements.” If you want to see competitors such as Eric try their hands (or their legs) at the long jump, come down to the track afterschool and witness some true athletic excellence.

Orangetopia!

by

On Saturday, February 11, Tesoro students and their guests streamed into the Honda Center in Anaheim. An orange carpet was laid at the front entrance while a photographer took pictures. Inside, orange “Orangetopia” wristbands were given out as well as water and sugar cookies with orange sprinkles. Finally arriving onto the dance floor, orange light up noodles were thrown into the crowd for students to dance with. The music was provided by DJ Alex Dreamz and two acrobats were seen hanging above the stage. The Orangetopia king and queen were chosen an hour before the end of the dance. Seniors, Lauren Fish and Duke O’Keef won and danced to the song “All My Life”. “Orangetopia was awesome, I had a great time with my friends and I will remember it forever” said senior Kelsey Harrison. When asked about his experience, Rohit Jayawardhan said “This dance has by far been the best dance we’ve had. I also can’t believe they had acrobats. The entertainment was amazing!” Orangetopia ended with a burst of orange confetti and the chandeliers lighting up in sync with the music.

Going the Distance: Pre-season Track

by

The start of a new semester comes with many changes, and a major change for many of the girls on the cross country team was the transition from post-season cross country into pre-season distance track.  “It’s hard to go straight from easy runs right into speed workouts,” explained sophomore Kylee Webster.  “And now we have to wake up early for Saturday practices again instead of being able to run on our own.”

On Monday, February 6, the girls started out their first week of the pre-season with a ladder speed workout on the track.  This meant they completed a series of distances at a fast pace from lowest distance to highest and back to lowest again with a recovery jog in between each interval.  On Tuesday there was a six-mile recovery run, followed by another speed workout on Wednesday, and a seventy to seventy-five minute long-distance run on Thursday.

Friday was a cool day, and after school the girls met for practice to complete a recovery run.  Despite some drizzling rain on Saturday morning, the distance track team met again at Tesoro for practice.  They left campus to complete their run, another speed workout.  “We’ve been doing a lot of hard workouts this week, but we need them to prepare for the season,” said junior Sarah Parsons.  “If we work hard now, then when it comes time to compete in the races, we’ll be prepared and we’ll feel a lot better knowing that we’re prepared.”

After returning to Tesoro after the workout on Saturday, junior Sarah Parsons and senior Amy LaRue recover by stretching and drinking plenty of water so they do not feel sore or sick later.

Before practice started early Saturday morning, juniors Madison French and Reanne Cedajas take some time to joke around as they wait for others to arive.
